Why there are not many 5 minute tasks in the web production world.
Here’s a quick list of what’s involved in what may seem like a simple 5 minute task such as changing a banner graphic on a webpage. Keep these in mind when you find yourself having to justify a quote to a client and you’ll both be happier.
(Actual steps will vary depending on how comprehensive a procedure you follow)
-
the job starts with taking the brief from the client
-
produce an estimate and feed it back to the client for sign off
- {a copy and paste booboo, see comments below}
-
brief the team who’ll do the work
-
“the actual work of getting the task done” (this is often the only bit that gets quoted for/ estimated)
-
check that the task has been done correctly (internal testing)
-
check with the client that the task has been done correctly on a staging/test server (acceptance testing) and get sign off OR fix any bugs (if so repeat the last steps again)
-
upload to the live server
-
update version control software
-
test on live
-
test with client and get signoff
-
close job internally (eg mark job as closed in your task tracking software and send job description over to the accounts department)
-
raise invoice
-
chase payment up
- phew your done!
Try doing that in 5 minutes!

I’ve learnt the hard way over time and through many different projects that step number 3 is my strongest suit by far.
Ah yes step number 3! I was wondering how long it was going to take for someone to ask me about step number 3.
Well it’s a classic example of what happens if you try and do a 10 minute task in 5 minutes
Good points. But you missed out
6.5 Realise it’s broken in Internet Explorer and return to previous step.

@alex - Good point! Should probably add a 6.6 - make a donation to the “Internet Explorer Swear Jar” too!
