Who builds the best websites… the best teams do.
I was thinking the other day about what it takes to make a really really good website, all it takes is a good team who works well together, a good team will sort out the rest of the puzzle.
So the ideal website that works for the user and the site owner takes hard work from a variety of different disciplines. Bringing the pieces together takes talent, good communication, and an understanding that all the pieces of the puzzle need to work together in order to make an excellent website. Different specialists bringing the pieces together is collaboration, the best collaborations produce the best web work*.
Garrett identified the nine pillars of the successful web team, which is a well respected view of the skills that you need in a web team, but if you have all of these pillars and they can’t collaborate/ work together/ inspire each other and so on then you’ll get average rather than awesome results. I’m going to bang on more about this topic for sure!
*not based on any actual scientific stylee research, just an observations of web projects in the last 8 years or so.

Firstly, hey phil! Good to see you up and running again back home!
Your post concerns me. Are you talking about teams of a certain size working on websites of a certain size?
There are many freelance web designers building perfectly good, usable, objective led websites all by themselves with the only collaboration being with the client. I myself am moving into that area. You seem to be implying we’re all doomed to failure.
Hey Matt, thanks and yes it’s good to be back home!
Let me put your mind at rest, your not doomed!… at least according to me your not!
For projects of a certain size where more than one person is involved it takes a team that works together really well to produce the best results.
Can an individual produce a perfectly good website by themselves and/or in collaboration with a client, well yes!
Do you think that one person can produce a website that is *better* than a team of the best web specialists that works exceptionally well together? Picture if you will… Michael Jordan by himself Vs the starting five of the LA Lakers. Jordon is going to do an awesome job of scoring some baskets, but won’t the starting 5 of the LA Lakers do a better job?
That’s an interesting break-down, but i am not convinced. i’m not sure that you *can* apply theory to what makes a website good or not. excellent websites just have that extra something - something magic! it’s like music - what makes a song good?
this is probably the best attempt at the break down of a great web team, but it’s quite a bespoke model that i don’t think can be applied very often.
